Some stories begin in a workshop. Others in a laboratory. L’Artisan Parfumeur’s story began in the back room of a small Parisian boutique.

It was there that Jean Laporte, a trained chemist and visionary creator, crafted his first pot-pourris by hand. Away from prying eyes, in this modest space that became a place of experimentation, he freely explored materials, textures and scents. Long before niche perfumery had a name, he was already defining its contours: a perfumery guided by instinct, creativity and a taste for the unexpected.

To mark its 50th anniversary, L’Artisan Parfumeur invited visitors to explore its origins. In Shanghai, at the heart of Julu Road, the Maison reimagined the backroom where it all began through an immersive exhibition conceived as a journey into the moments that shaped its identity. More than a reconstruction, the installation offered a sensory exploration of the creations, inspirations and artisanal savoir-faire that have defined the Maison for five decades.

At its heart, the exhibition celebrated a singular vision of creation, one rooted in curiosity, experimentation and freedom. A philosophy instilled by Jean Laporte from the very beginning, and one that remains at the core of L’Artisan Parfumeur today.

At the centre of the exhibition stood Florilège, a work created exclusively for the Maison by Chinese artist Hu Bingqing. Born into a family of celadon artisans, she carries forward an ancestral craft passed down through generations. She reinterpreted the pot-pourri imagined by Jean Laporte in 1976 through a contemporary artistic lens, reflecting the Maison’s enduring spirit of creative freedom and sensory exploration.

Inspired by the dahlia, Jean Laporte's favourite flower, the work took the form of sculptural petals, enhanced by a soft, luminous celadon glaze that transformed the Maison's iconic pot-pourri into a contemporary work of art.

Through Florilège, two legacies came together: a Chinese craft tradition passed down through generations, and that of a French Maison that has always championed a free-spirited and creative approach to perfumery. Their encounter beautifully embodied the spirit of L'Artisan Parfumeur, bringing cultures, materials and imaginations into dialogue to create new emotions.

In Shanghai, this anniversary exhibition celebrated more than fifty years of creation. It brought past and present into conversation, uniting the Maison's founding vision with the contemporary forms of artistic expression that continue to enrich its creative universe.
